Lieutenant General Athanasios Garinis

Lieutenant General Athanasios Garinis was born in Katerini. He was admitted to the Hellenic Military Academy (Evelpidon) in 1984 and graduated in 1988 as Armour Second Lieutenant.

He has graduated from all mandatory armour schools and courses, the Hellenic Supreme War College, and the Hellenic National Defence College. He has been awarded all decorations, commendations and medals, as such are provided for by his rank. He holds a postgraduate degree in Applied Strategy and International Security from the University of Plymouth.

During his career, he served in Armour Units and as Commander of the 21st Medium Tank Battalion (Alexandroupolis) and the 957th Military Police Battalion (Thessaloniki).

He has served as Staff Officer in HQ NRDC-IT in Milan, Director of the 3rd Staff Office of the XXV Armour Brigade, Director of the 4th Staff Office of the XXIII Armour Brigade, Deputy Director of the G5 Section of the Hellenic C’ Army Corps/NRDC-GR, Deputy Commander of the 31st Mechanised Brigade, and Deputy Director in the Plans and Exercises Directorate of the Hellenic Army General Staff.

In 2019, he was promoted to General Officer (Brigadier General) and assumed duties as Commanding General of the XXIII Armour Brigade. In 2020, he was assigned as Director of the Defence Planning and Programming Directorate of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff.

In 2022, he was promoted to Major General and assumed duties as Commanding General of the XX Armour Division. In March 2023, he was appointed Director of the Hellenic Army General Staff Armour Directorate.

On 13 January 2024, he was promoted to Lieutenant General and assumed duties as Commanding General of the Hellenic C’ Army Corps/NRDC-GR.

He holds a language proficiency certificate in English (excellent knowledge).

He is married and has two daughters.
